16th annual Dilgard Open golf outing a success

MIDDLETOWN - Oct. 8, 2009 - The crisp and windy early fall day reminded some of Scottish golfing weather at Otterbein Homes' 16th annual Dilgard Open on Sept. 28. While the wind may have blown some golf balls off course, spirits remained high and a fun day of golfing prevailed.

This was once again a winning event for everyone who participated, said 2009 Dilgard Open Organizer and Otterbein partner Fran Sack, who added close to $30,000 was netted. Proceeds from the event benefit the Dilgard Endowment, a fund used in part to help those living in all Otterbein communities who no longer have the financial resources to completely support their home and medical care.

Thirty teams, with 116 golfers, participated in the golf outing at Brown's Run Country Club in Middletown.

The first-place winning team with a net score of 49 and 23 under par was Alliance Team No. 2. Team members were Nick Callsen, Larry Kibler, Denny McConnell and Dave Callsen. In addition to having the men's longest drive, Nick Callsen also had a hole in one on Hole No. 12 and was awarded a year's membership to Brown's Run Country Club.

Sack said hole draw was used to determine second- and third-place winners. The second-place winning team with a net score of 53 and 19 under par was Alliance Team No. 1. Team members were Ron Osbourne, Mike Veder, John Schwab and Ed McConnell.

The third-place winning team with a net score of 53 and 19 under par was the Washburn Team. Team members were Jim Washburn, John Washburn, Mark Washburn and Roger Clark. The Rev. Howard Washburn accompanied them.

The Howard W. Washburn Cup, a crystal claret pitcher made in England and donated by Otterbein partner John Stephenson, is presented to the first place team every year. Team members also receive engraved crystal goblets as part of their award. Washburn is a former Otterbein administrator and visionary pioneer in long-term care. He is partially responsible for the founding of The American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA).

Volunteers who helped make the day possible came from Otterbein, MorganStanley Smith Barney and Tesco. Vendors and major sponsors were MorganStanley Smith Barney, Fifth Third Bank, Remedi Senior Care, US Bank, Gordon Food Services, McKesson Medical Surgical Group, Atrium Medical Center, Alliance Printing and Mailing Services and Lebanon Ford.

The 2010 Dilgard Golf Outing will be held on Sept. 20. The Dilgard Open was created in honor of Dr. Charles K. Dilgard, former president/CEO of Otterbein Homes, who retired after 28 years of service to the mission of Otterbein Homes.
