Over the last century, the average life span has increased almost three decades. That’s good news. And people all over the nation are realizing the importance of keeping in touch with extended family. Our extended families give us identity, support and shared experiences. It is becoming more common to get four and even five generations together.
November has traditionally been a time for family reunions over turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie. But Otterbein Portage Valley Retirement Living Community has been seeing reunions all year long!
After visiting several communities and research, Sandy Bauer urged her parents to become members of Otterbein Portage Valley. As she put it, “I was really considering my own future retirement options and figured Dad and Mom would love the neighbors, caring staff and amenities as much as I do.”
This August, Sandy decided she was ready to make that move. Just barely into the 55 plus requirement, she already feels she has made the right decision. As she says, “Why wait? I’m going to enjoy all those activities like music performances and day trips right now!”
She also feels she’s gaining so much. According to Sandy, she is gaining independence from home maintenance, yard work and stacks of bills each month. With her regular monthly payment, Sandy gains peace of mind that she can stay toasty warm all winter, take those long showers, keep that reading light on until that juicy novel is finished in the wee hours of the morning or watch the latest Turner Classic Movies marathon on cable television.
The fact that Sandy is just a few doors down from Mom is a bonus. And, later this month, Sandy’s aunt is moving from Cleveland to enjoy all the benefits of Otterbein assisted living and being near her family.
Sandy isn’t alone. Recently, one member’s daughter helped her mother-in-law choose and decorate her new apartment. Another family, with a combined total of more than 20 years of being part of the Otterbein family with grandparents, aunts and uncles, nudged Mom toward a brand new one-bedroom villa. Some have even discovered long lost cousins once they arrive!
Executive Director Tom Keith helped his grandfather choose paint colors, sort through carpet samples and coordinate his move-in beautifully last month.
Community Information Director Jessica Derkis’ grandmother, after a brief stint in rehabilitation and therapy, chose to stay in nursing care and she loves it! She feels pampered with whirlpool baths, home-cooked meals she didn’t have to try to prepare, daily housekeeping and an outstanding laundry service that makes sure her clothes are always returned to her clean and well maintained.
