Third Cincinnati Avalon by Otterbein Location Opens - First Resident Moves In

MAINEVILLE, OH – Jim Raffel, 85, is the first resident of the new Avalon by Otterbein at Maineville in Hamilton Township. Raffel and nearly 100 dignitaries, officials and community members joined together to dedicate the new “small house neighborhood” on Aug. 10. Raffel helped with the ribbon cutting and is excited to be living in his new home.

The Maineville location is now accepting residents on a priority wait-list while it receives certification from the state. Otterbein expects that residents can begin to move into the new neighborhood this fall.

Otterbein Homes’ leadership team members, including Jill C. Hreben, Otterbein Homes' president and CEO; Sue McConn, vice president of Avalon by Otterbein; Diane Ruder, vice president of development, and Thomas A. Compton, chair of the Otterbein Homes' Board of Trustees, were among those who spoke at the event.

This marks the fifth Avalon by Otterbein small house neighborhood that Otterbein Homes has opened in the state of Ohio, and the third in Greater Cincinnati. Together, these neighborhoods provide 250 elders with 24-hour skilled nursing and rehabilitative care. Otterbein’s other two Warren County locations are in Springboro and at the Atrium in Middletown.

“What we are doing is revolutionary. Research shows that residents are more satisfied and have better outcomes in a small house environment,” said Hreben. “Avalon by Otterbein is leading the nation with these new homes. We are setting the standard for others to follow.” Hreben and Otterbein are on a mission to liberate elders, and those who serve them, from the old institutional model and mindset of caring for elders.

Avalon small house neighborhoods are a radical departure from institutional-style skilled nursing care – it’s home. With nutritious home-cooked meals, private suites and only 10 residents per home, Otterbein’s Avalon small house neighborhoods have the highest ratio of staff to residents in the state of Ohio.

The design of the small house and the location within the community makes the transition for elders leaving their own home easier and provides the optimal opportunity for family and friends to stay connected.

At the dedication on Aug. 10, Otterbein Homes received proclamations from the following government officials:

· Leah Winkler, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland's Office
· State Sen. Eric Kearney D-Ohio, District 9
· Brittany Elking, U.S. Rep. John Boehner's, R-Ohio, Office, District 8
· Brooke Hill, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown's, D-Ohio, Office
· Katie Moran, U.S. Senator George Voinovich's, R-Ohio, Office
· Ralph Blanton, board president, Little Miami Area Chamber of Commerce
· Becky Ehling, Hamilton Township Trustee
