Our local Area Office on Aging notes that nearly 18 percent of northwest Ohioans are 60 and better. Many are still working or finding new and fun careers in the area.

We’ve often heard, “Do I have to quit work to enjoy Otterbein Portage Valley?” With all the great trips, happenings and get togethers, it helps to have a flexible work schedule but no, you can work however long you like.

Celebrate summer’s end by attending Otterbein Portage Valley’s Chicken Barbeque and Fall Festival. The festival is from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at 20311 Pemberville Rd., Pemberville. Go and enjoy a delicious lunch with your neighbors.

Otterbein Portage Valley in Pemberville is set to host the fourth concert of the 2010 Music in the Air series.

On Tuesday, Aug. 10, the Sounds Great Band will offer Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller-era favorites in a parking lot party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The dancing starts right after a lovely picnic lunch.

The last Music in the Air concert will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, with Double Trouble, featuring Bill Liparoto and Barbi G, offering a wide variety of music from country to oldies to blues, plus Dean Martin and Elvis impersonations.

We’re enjoying our own “Orange Barrel” season at Otterbein Portage Valley. The beautiful new life enrichment center is really starting to look like the coolest place to hang out, the gazebo is taking shape, the new blacktop has given us a feeling of starting afresh, and some of the villas are seeing some new additions like patios, sunrooms and some members are enjoying very practical retractable awnings.
