"Avalon by Otterbein Begins"

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE HOUSE

Otterbein has embarked upon a revolutionary journey to change the way people envision nursing care.  As part of this journey, Avalon by Otterbein was created.

Avalon Small House neighborhoods are placed in residential locations and have five small houses for 10 people each.

The house is designed to be a home for the people who live there.  Everything – from warm, inviting private rooms and baths to the committed highly skilled staff – says welcome home.

This journey is about change, and Otterbein wants to help others take the same steps.

The organization is co-sponsoring an informative workshop with Rabig Consulting for those interested in adopting the Small House model.

Small House... Big Difference
In Exceptional Skilled Nursing Care

One look at an Avalon by Otterbein small house neighborhood and it is immediately clear these small houses are unlike any other long-term care environment in Ohio. It is a house designed to be a home for the people who live there. Residents still benefit from the outstanding nursing care that has distinguished Otterbein for years, but the focus is on enjoying life in a home where nurturing personal care is provided to each individual.

Avalon by Otterbein neighborhoods are situated in convenient, familiar residential locations. The small house removes people from the traditional model of institutional care and takes them “back home” to their communities. The design of the small house and the location within the community provides the optimal opportunity for family and friends to stay connected.

In an Avalon by Otterbein small house, neighborhood life is rooted in a philosophy that recognizes the uniqueness of the individual and honors the universal need for human warmth and companionship. The specialized, trained staff understands that no person wants to live in an environment that focuses solely on their frailty, and so quality of life becomes the small house focus.

Elders deserve more than institutions can provide! Otterbein is the first organization in America to take the bold step of moving elders to homes in the community. Six locations will become sites for Avalon by Otterbein neighborhoods, each with five beautiful homes. Avalon by Otterbein at Perrysburg is located at Rivers Edge and is now open and Avalon by Otterbein at Monclova, located at Waterside is due to open in April 2008.

Avalon by Otterbein neighborhoods in Clearcreek Township and Middletown are scheduled to open in the summer and fall of 2008, with a Maineville neighborhood to open in 2009.
