Benevolent Care

Otterbein Retirement Living Communities has been a provider of quality retirement services for more than 96 years. One thing that sets Otterbein apart is a Benevolent Care Program that contributes to our successful ongoing ministry.

What is Benevolent Care?

Benevolent Care assists community members who are no longer able to pay the full cost of care. Generous gifts from churches, individuals and businesses support this program. Current Benevolent Care assistance within Otterbein requires about $1 million per year.

Who receives Benevolent Care?

Community members whose resources have been depleted largely through ever-increasing healthcare costs receive benevolent assistance. Most are careful financial planners but cannot cope with increasing costs because of fixed or limited incomes. They simply cannot pay their full cost of care.

What is the Endowment for Benevolent Care?

The Endowment for Benevolent Care is a permanently invested fund where only the interest is used and can only be used for Benevolent Care.

How are my gift dollars used?

Otterbein will use your gift as you designate. Unrestricted gifts go into the general reserve with priority for benevolent assistance. Gifts restricted by the donor for Benevolent Care are used ONLY for that purpose. Making an unrestricted gift to Benevolent Care at Otterbein provides financial strength to the entire Otterbein family. You may, however, restrict a gift for use at any one of the Otterbein communities.

What about government help?

Government programs – such as Medicaid – benefit many health care residents. However, when these programs do not pay the full cost of services, the costs must be supplemented through Benevolent Care. For those community members who do not qualify for Medicaid or who live in non-health care areas, Otterbein Benevolent Care is also available.

Must someone leave if their finances become depleted?

Otterbein strives to do all in its power to provide assistance to those who are not able to pay. Community members who have depleted their assets, through no fault of their own, have never been asked to leave an Otterbein community.

A gift to Benevolent Care is a life-giving gift. Any gift, no matter how large or how small, makes a difference.
