Small House … Big Difference®

Privacy and community are at the center of the Otterbein Skilled Nursing & Rehab Neighborhood experience.

All elders and rehab residents have their own suites and can decorate their rooms with personal treasures. They have renewed control over their daily lives. A discreet ceiling track lift ensures the safety and comfort for those who need assistance. Medication is kept in a locked cabinet in each suite.

The community room is the heart of the small house experience. This large room is the perfect place for watching television, visiting with family, and participating in activities with other elders and rehab residents.

Mealtimes are shared family-style and elders and rehab residents may join in preparation. Meals are served around a large family table and family and friends are welcome. Food is hearty, laughter is frequent, and hearts are warmed. The “small house” provides social outlets that people often miss in a traditional nursing setting.

Setting Goals

A visit to an Otterbein Skilled Nursing & Rehab Neighborhood is centered on personal goals, both long and short term. Short-term goals are designed to keep elders and rehab residents on track and motivated during their stay. These goals are attainable,
measurable, and most importantly, personal.

Short-term goals are only the first step, and serve as the building blocks for long-term goals, which are accomplished after returning home.

Most Otterbein Skilled Nursing & Rehab Neighborhoods are located in residential areas and feature five one-story homes with 10 residents each. A total of 50 residents share a neighborhood. Residents in the one-story house enjoy a spacious great room with a hearth area, beautiful patio, residential kitchen for cooking favorite recipes, family dining area, a spa/physical therapy room, a den and private suites for each resident.

Healthcare

Specialized Staff

Our staff receives extensive training to work in this unique environment. A specially-trained team works together with elders and rehab residents daily, and includes elder assistants, a guide, a coach, a quality of life coordinator, and a housing coordinator.

In addition to standard training, each elder assistant receives additional, specialized training. Each neighborhood is staffed with a team of nurses. Rehab professionals provide specialized physical, speech, and occupational therapy. The design of the small house presents a setting that is similar to their own home. This makes possible an abundance of activities for their rehabilitation and offers natural surroundings for accomplishing everyday tasks.

Both residents and staff appreciate key differences such as no institutional schedules, meals or routines; high elder assistant staffing ratios; and home cooked meals. The benefits of these changes include better outcomes, improved quality of life and satisfaction for residents and increased nurse effectiveness. Otterbein Skilled Nursing & Rehab Neighborhoods are licensed and certified by the Ohio Department of Health, and are both Medicare and Medicaid certified.
