Portage Valley - Meet a Resident

Betty Henry

Betty Henry has been involved with Otterbein Portage Valley since before the community was a community. A member of the group who met to talk about starting a nursing home in the area, she was one of the first to walk on the concrete foundation after it was built.

She also was one of the first volunteer receptionists.

"I saw the loving care that the residents received. I decided then that this was where I would come when I couldn't manage a home anymore," Henry said.

She has lived at Otterbein Portage Valley since July 2008.

"The best part of living here is feeling like you are part of a family, " she said, noting everyone is friendly and helpful. "When something needs fixing, there is someone to do it. They do a wonderful job in cleaning snow off the driveways and sidewalks."

Henry appreciates not only the physical care the Otterbein partners put into maintaining her home, but also the interest they take in her.

"They care about our entire well-being," she said. "There is exercise - strengthening and balance - to keep us active. Games and card playing are available. There also are entertaining programs. It's a carefree life."
