North Shore History
Today’s Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices — an organization long-defined by innovation and compassion — has been gaining support and momentum since its founding. It is still driven by vision and faith.
Otterbein North Shore arose from the spiritual, educational and cultural phenomenon of the 1870s, known as the Chautauqua Movement. At the time of the movement, Lakeside Chautauqua was established by United Methodist clergy who gathered during the summer on the Marblehead peninsula. Lakeside Chautauqua is a unique, historic community providing a summer Chautauqua experience to guests, blending together programs in religion, education, cultural arts and recreation.
Nearby the Lakeside Chautauqua entrance — in keeping with its United Methodist tradition — lies the modern Otterbein North Shore Senior Lifestyle Community, founded in 1997.
Our official origins date back to 1912, when the first Otterbein community was built in Lebanon, Ohio. The full story of Otterbein’s founding will inspire you.
Originally a home for the elderly and orphaned, in the 1960’s, Otterbein devoted itself exclusively to enhancing the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons.
Since then, Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices has grown to include retirement communities, skilled nursing and rehab neighborhoods, and home health. We continue to look forward with vision and faith.
