St. Marys History
Today’s Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices — an organization long-defined by innovation and compassion — has been gaining support and momentum since its founding. It is still driven by vision and faith.
A desire to draw closer to God inspired the Community that is now Otterbein St. Marys. It began in the early 1940s, when the Evangelical United Brethren built a retreat center for prayer, meditation and study. It endured as such after its merger with the Methodist Church in 1968. In the 1980s, the retreat became a retirement community.
The first independent living patio homes were built in 1987, bringing innovation to senior living. That effort continues. In 2011, Otterbein St. Marys built the Life Enrichment Center with its specially designed wellness activities offered in partnership with the local YMCAs.
Originally a home for the elderly and orphaned, in the 1960’s Otterbein devoted itself exclusively to enhancing the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons.
Since then, Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices has grown to include retirement communities, skilled nursing and rehab neighborhoods, and home health. We continue to look forward with vision and faith.
